AIKEN COUNTY, SC. (THECOUNT) — Axel K. Ulteig, 15, of Aiken, South Carolina, was killed Saturday evening in a two-vehicle crash involving a Polaris side-by-side UTV and a Nissan Sentra in Aiken County, according to officials.
The fatal collision occurred around 5:40 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of South Hankinson Street and Atomic Road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Authorities said Axel was a passenger in a 2026 Polaris side-by-side UTV traveling eastbound on South Hankinson Street.
According to Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the Polaris entered the intersection with Atomic Road and collided with a southbound 2020 Nissan Sentra.
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office confirmed Axel died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.
Two additional occupants inside the Polaris UTV were injured and transported to an area hospital for treatment, officials said.
Authorities have not released the identities or conditions of the Polaris driver or the second passenger.
Investigators said the driver of the Nissan Sentra was not injured.
No other injuries were reported.
Emergency crews responded to the intersection Saturday evening as investigators documented evidence and worked to clear the damaged vehicles from the roadway.
Atomic Road serves as a major corridor through portions of Aiken County and connects residential, industrial, and commercial areas near the Savannah River Site region.
The intersection with South Hankinson Street experiences regular local traffic and has been the scene of previous crashes due to cross-traffic movement and vehicle speeds through the area.
Officials said it was not immediately known whether anyone involved in the collision was wearing a seatbelt or other safety restraints.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol and Aiken County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the crash.
Authorities said an autopsy on Axel will be conducted in Newberry.
