WY Man Arrested After Trying To Break Into County Jail While Fleeing Police

CHEYENNE, WY. (THECOUNT)Adam Scott, 44, a transient, was arrested early Thursday after allegedly fleeing a vehicle crash in downtown Cheyenne and unknowingly attempting to break into the Laramie County Detention Center while trying to evade police, according to Laramie County Sheriff Brian Kozak.

Kozak said Scott may have mistaken the jail for a motel after noticing the detention center’s illuminated red “VACANCY” sign.

“I’m guessing maybe what happened was he saw the flashing ‘VACANCY’ sign and thought maybe it was a hotel,” Kozak said. “But it wasn’t.”

Cheyenne is the capital of Wyoming, located in the state’s southeastern corner near the Colorado border.

According to the Cheyenne Police Department, officers were dispatched just before midnight Thursday to a crash near the intersection of West 19th Street and Brent Avenue.

Investigators said Scott was driving in the wrong direction on West 20th Street before attempting to turn south onto Brent Avenue. Police said he failed to complete the turn, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway, strike a building, and continue into a nearby parking lot before coming to a stop.

Authorities said Scott fled the crash scene on foot after asking a passerby to report the collision.

Meanwhile, surveillance cameras at the nearby Laramie County Detention Center captured a man later identified as Scott attempting to open multiple exterior doors around the jail before hiding near the facility’s intake entrance.

Kozak said detention deputies located the suspect after staff monitoring the jail’s security cameras alerted officers.

“You ever wonder what happened to that kid that always lost at hide-and-seek? I think he’s in our jail,” Kozak joked in a video posted following the incident.

Deputies said Scott initially provided a false name before learning Cheyenne police were searching for a suspect who had fled the nearby crash scene. Officers took him into custody after confirming his identity.

Police later transported Scott to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center for evaluation before booking him into the Laramie County Detention Center.

Scott was arrested on suspicion of falsely identifying himself to law enforcement, driving under suspension, driving the wrong way on a one-way street, failing to provide proof of insurance, and leaving the scene of a crash.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
