WASHINGTON, D.C. (THECOUNT) — Nasire Best, 21, of Maryland, was identified as the gunman fatally shot by U.S. Secret Service agents Saturday afternoon following a shooting incident near the White House, according to officials.
Authorities said the incident unfolded near the White House complex in Washington, D.C., prompting a rapid response from federal law enforcement personnel and Secret Service agents assigned to the area.
According to preliminary reports, Best allegedly opened fire Saturday afternoon before being confronted by Secret Service personnel.
Officials said agents discharged their weapons during the encounter, striking Best.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and transported Best to a nearby hospital, where he later died from injuries sustained in the shooting.
No additional fatalities were immediately reported.
Federal authorities have not publicly detailed whether any Secret Service agents, law enforcement personnel, or civilians were injured during the incident.
Investigators said Best allegedly had multiple prior encounters with the Secret Service before Saturday’s shooting.
According to officials, Best was previously detained June 26, 2025, after allegedly flagging down Secret Service agents and making threats.
Authorities also stated he was detained again July 10, 2025, after allegedly entering a restricted area.
Officials indicated Best had a documented history of mental health-related issues, though further details have not been released.
The area surrounding the White House experienced a significant law enforcement presence Saturday as investigators secured the scene and conducted interviews.
The White House and surrounding federal buildings remain among the most heavily secured locations in the United States, with Secret Service personnel routinely monitoring pedestrian and vehicle access throughout the district.
Authorities have not released additional information regarding a possible motive.
The shooting remains under active federal investigation.
