LIGONIER, IN. (THECOUNT) — William Sanford, of Warsaw, Indiana, has been identified as the victim in a fatal vehicle-versus-train collision Wednesday near Ligonier, according to Thursday morning reports.
Sanford, 41, was killed Wednesday night after attempting to cross railroad tracks near Perry Road & Gerber Street in Ligonier.
The collision occurred Wednesday before 11 p.m. at the Norfolk Southern Railroad crossing at Perry Road after, for unknown reasons, Sanford attempted to drive across the tracks. His vehicle was struck by a passing train.
Sanford was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one aboard the train was injured.
A Ligonier Police Department drone was used to make sure Sanford was the only person in his car, reports WANE.
A further investigation into the crash will be conducted by the Norfolk Southern Police Department and the Amtrak Police Department.
