Former KXAN Reporter Arrested In Sunday DUI Hummer Crash That Killed Pflugerville TX Man

PFLUGERVILLE, TX, (THECOUNT) — Dawn Witt Denny has been identified as the suspect arrested after Pflugerville police say she collided with another driver early Sunday morning. Denny worked at KXAN as a reporter for a 10-month period in 2013-2014, according to the station.

Denny, 50, faces an intoxication manslaughter charge following a crash that occurred on the 4800 block of State Highway 45 E., which is near North Heatherwilde Boulevard, in Pflugerville, TX, around 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Upon arrival, first responders found an unconscious male victim lying in the middle of the road. That victim was soon pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A woman, later identified as Denny, told the officer she was driving her Hummer and hit another vehicle, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

“Marks on the roadway indicated that Denny’s vehicle left the roadway prior to striking another vehicle,” the arrest warrant said. “Denny stated she was looking at her cell phone GPS and when she looked up she collided into the vehicle.” source

Denny admitted to officers she had taken Xanax and another prescription medication about an hour before the collision. Officers noted a “moderate” odor of alcohol emitting from her person.

She refused to participate in a field sobriety test, according to the crash records.

Denny was transported to the Travis County Jail and was still listed as an inmate as of Monday.

Her bond is set at $250,000 and she must install an ignition interlock device in her vehicle as is state law.

The identity of the victim was not provided by officials.

Anyone with possible information on the dealy crash should contact police at 911.

According to her Facebook page, Denny works at Magnolia Hospitality Management and is a former assistant professor of journalism at Austin Community College District. She is also listed as formerly employed as a events director at Lost Creek Country Club and prior to that, a freelance reporter at NBC DFW.
