WHITLEY COUNTY, KY. (THECOUNT) — Ronald W. Leach, of Jellico, Tennessee, has been identified as the man killed in an officer-involved shooting in Whitley County.
Leach, 29, was named as the suspect in a standoff with police after he held a one-year-old child hostage with a box cutter while inside a vehicle around 1:30 Monday morning. Police said, the suspect exited the vehicle and barricaded himself inside a nearby home.
Kentucky State Police say they were responding to a hostage situation at a home just south of Williamsburg in the Saxton community.
When troopers entered the home, a fight ensued and Leach was shot by police.
Authorities say the suspect reached for a weapon, which led them to open fire. The suspect is now dead. Police have identified him as Ronald W. Leach, 29, of Jellico, Tennessee. source
Leach was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds sustained in the incident.
The involved troopers and the child were not injured in the deadly incident.
The trooper who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave – as is standard procedure.
