COLOMBIA (THECOUNT) — Dramatic video captured the moment a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia Monday morning, sending buildings and structures violently shaking as residents across several cities experienced severe ground movement.
The earthquake struck at approximately 7:34 a.m. local time Aug. 10, with the epicenter near San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó, according to the Colombian Geological Service and U.S. Geological Survey. The USGS placed the earthquake at a depth of approximately 110 kilometers, while Colombia’s geological agency reported a depth of 103 kilometers.
The earthquake was strong enough to produce severe shaking, with the USGS assigning the event a maximum estimated intensity of VIII on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale. The shaking was felt across a broad portion of western Colombia, including major population centers.
Footage captured during the earthquake shows buildings swaying, interior spaces violently shaking and objects being thrown from shelves and surfaces. Other videos show residents rushing outside as the ground continued to move and scenes of damage emerging after the shaking stopped.

The earthquake struck near San José del Palmar but affected communities far beyond the immediate epicentral area. Cali, Quibdó, Pereira, Armenia and Manizales were among the cities reporting significant effects from the earthquake and its powerful shaking.
Reports from the disaster zone showed collapsed and damaged structures, while emergency crews began searching damaged buildings and assisting people trapped or injured in the aftermath.
The earthquake also prompted authorities to take emergency measures as officials assessed damage and worked to reach affected communities. Communications and transportation were disrupted in some areas, adding to the challenges facing emergency personnel.
The depth of the earthquake was significant. Although the epicenter was relatively deep underground, the magnitude of the event allowed seismic energy to travel across a wide area. The USGS classified the earthquake as a major significant event and issued a red PAGER alert indicating the potential for substantial human and economic impact.

Aftershocks followed the main earthquake, with additional seismic activity recorded near the epicentral region. The USGS continues to monitor the sequence as officials in Colombia assess the extent of the damage.
Colombia is located in a seismically active region where the Nazca Plate interacts with the South American Plate. The USGS describes the earthquake as occurring within the South America subduction zone, where tectonic forces generate earthquakes at varying depths beneath the region.
As rescue and assessment operations continue, additional information about casualties, structural damage and the full extent of the disaster is expected to emerge.
