Officials say a man was killed Friday night in an officer-involved shooting at a Cocoa Beach condominium complex during an apparent domestic dispute call.
Tim Berger, 59, was shot and killed by police who were on scene investigating reports of an intoxicated man firing a gun inside a residence. Cocoa Beach Police Chief Scott Rosenfeld said officers were called to the Royal Colonial Condos on South Banana River Boulevard around 10:30 p.m. when a woman reported that her husband, Berger, was intoxicated and fired a gun inside their home.
Rosenfeld said several officers responded to the home and were violently threatened when they tried to make contact with Berger, forcing officers James Scheiner and Taylor Payne to fire their weapons. “The officers were put in a position to use deadly force,” Rosenfeld said.
Neither Scheiner nor Payne were injured, the chief said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Cocoa Beach police are investigating the shooting.
