CARY, IL. (THECOUNT) — A 14-year-old boy has died after he was found suffering from a gunshot wound inside a Cary home Saturday afternoon, authorities said, as police investigate the fatal shooting in the northwest Chicago suburbs.
The Cary Police Department and Cary Fire Protection District responded around 1:29 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, to 338 Carl Sands Drive for a reported medical emergency.

911 callers reported that a person was bleeding and someone was performing CPR, according to fire department radio traffic. When paramedics arrived, they were directed to a teenage male inside the residence who had suffered what officials described as a critical traumatic injury.
Cary Deputy Police Chief Scott Naydenoff said officers were met by occupants of the home, who directed them to the injured teenager. Officers immediately rendered medical aid before transferring care to Cary Fire Protection District personnel.
A medical helicopter was initially requested because of the severity of the boy’s condition, but the request was canceled shortly afterward. The teenager was instead transported by ambulance to an area hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries.
The boy was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where he later died from his injuries, Naydenoff said.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the hospital and took possession of the victim for an autopsy. A postmortem examination is scheduled for Monday morning.
Coroner’s officials confirmed that the boy suffered a gunshot wound but said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. The victim’s identity has not been publicly released.
Crime scene tape remained around the residence throughout Saturday as investigators worked at the scene. Investigators with the Major Investigations Assistance Team (MIAT) also responded to assist Cary police with the death investigation.
Naydenoff said the investigation remains in its early stages and that additional information is expected to be released later this week.
Authorities have not announced an arrest, suspect or possible motive in connection with the shooting. Police also have not disclosed who fired the weapon or whether the shooting was accidental, intentional or otherwise occurred.
The investigation remains active as detectives and MIAT investigators work to establish the circumstances that led to the teenager suffering the fatal gunshot wound inside the residence.
Cary is a village primarily in McHenry County in northeastern Illinois, approximately 40 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The community is part of the greater Chicago metropolitan area and is located near Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove and Barrington.
