LENOX, MA. (THECOUNT) — Dr. Bruce Evenchik, 78, of Pittsfield, a recently retired ophthalmologist, has been identified as the man killed Saturday after a tree fell on him while he was walking his dog through Kennedy Park in Lenox, Massachusetts.
Lenox police and Lenox Ambulance responded around 1:20 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, to Kennedy Park after Evenchik was found unresponsive by a passerby on a trail near the parking lot at the Aspinwall Road entrance.

Evenchik was discovered near the trail after the tree fell, according to reporting on the incident. The circumstances surrounding the fatal tree strike remain under investigation. The condition of the dog was not provided.
Evenchik was a longtime ophthalmologist in the Berkshire County community. Berkshire Eye Center lists him as a physician specializing in comprehensive ophthalmology and identifies its Pittsfield office at 740 Williams Street.
Evenchik was associated with Berkshire Eye Center, which traces its history to two Pittsfield eye-care practices, including Berkshire Eye Associates, which was operated by Evenchik and Dr. Michael Cancilla before the practices merged.
Authorities have not indicated that the tree was intentionally cut, damaged or otherwise involved in any criminal activity. Available information indicates the death occurred after the tree fell while Evenchik was walking through the park with his dog.
The incident occurred near the Aspinwall Road entrance to Kennedy Park, a wooded recreational area in Lenox that contains walking and hiking trails. Police activity remained at the park following the discovery as officials investigated the fatal incident.
No additional injuries have been reported in connection with the tree strike, and authorities have not announced any criminal investigation or charges stemming from the death.
Evenchik’s death comes in the Berkshire County community where he spent his professional career providing ophthalmology services. He was recently retired from the medical practice.
Lenox is a town in Berkshire County in western Massachusetts, approximately 130 miles west of Boston and about 10 miles south of Pittsfield. Kennedy Park is located near the center of Lenox and is part of the area’s extensive wooded recreational and trail network.
