Courtney Love Demanded Kurt Cobain Death Investigation File, Told Cops ‘Keep Zero Copies’

SEATTLE, WA. (THECOUNT)Courtney Love requested that Seattle police turn over the complete death investigation file into the 1994 death of her husband, Kurt Cobain, and retain no copies, according to a newly surfaced document cited by the investigative group “Who Killed Kurt?”

According to the reported document, Love made the request through her attorney in October 1995, approximately 18 months after Cobain was found dead at the couple’s Seattle home. The letter reportedly asked then-Seattle Police Chief Norm Stamper to provide the complete investigative file, including crime scene photographs, while retaining no copies.

Cobain, the lead singer and guitarist for Nirvana, was found dead at his Seattle residence in April 1994. The Seattle Police Department ruled his death a suicide following its investigation. In 2014, detectives reviewed the case after previously unreleased photographs were discovered, but reaffirmed the original finding that Cobain died by suicide.

Retired Seattle Police Capt. Neil Low, who participated in the original investigation, told the New York Post the request described in the letter was “absurd.” Low said investigators did not comply with the demand, noting that relinquishing the department’s only investigative file would have undermined public records accountability.

According to Low, representatives for Love were concerned that individuals were attempting to profit by leaking information from the investigative file. He questioned how the department could satisfy public records obligations if it no longer possessed the official case materials.

Love has consistently accepted the official determination that Cobain died by suicide. Despite that, the case has remained the subject of numerous books, documentaries and conspiracy theories alleging the Nirvana frontman was murdered, claims that law enforcement has repeatedly rejected.

The Seattle Police Department has not publicly commented on the authenticity or significance of the newly reported 1995 letter.

Seattle is located in King County in western Washington and is widely recognized as the birthplace of the grunge music movement, which propelled Nirvana to international fame in the early 1990s.
