IL Woman Ebony Calvillo Mendiburu ID’d As Bicyclist In Monday Hampshire Fatal Hit-And-Run

HAMPSHIRE, IL. (THECOUNT) — — Ebony Calvillo Mendiburu, 27, of Hampshire, Illinois, was killed in a hit-and-run crash while riding her bicycle early Monday morning.

Calvillo Mendiburu was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Kane County Coroner’s Office, she was struck by a vehicle on U.S. Route 20 north of Big Timber Road in Hampshire. Preliminary findings from an autopsy determined she suffered multiple injuries consistent with a bicyclist being struck by an automobile.

The crash occurred around 12:40 a.m. Monday in far northwest suburban Kane County. Hampshire police were dispatched to the area near U.S. 20 between Big Timber Road and Gast Road after receiving reports of a traffic crash involving a bicyclist. A caller reported seeing debris and a person lying in the roadway. Two passing drivers stopped to provide aid before emergency responders arrived.

Following the crash, a long stretch of U.S. Route 20 was closed in both directions between Big Timber Road and Higgins Road while investigators processed the scene. The Hampshire Police Department, Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, and Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the area.

Police said the road would remain closed for several hours as the investigation continued. Drivers were advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office stated that toxicology samples were collected and sent to a national forensic laboratory for analysis. Officials said they are working closely with the Hampshire Police Department and the Fox Valley Major Crimes Task Force on the investigation.

In a statement, Kane County Coroner Dr. Monica Silva extended her deepest sympathy to Ebony Calvillo Mendiburu’s loved ones.

Police are asking anyone who traveled on U.S. Route 20 between Big Timber Road and Gast Road between 12:30 a.m. and 12:50 a.m. Monday to contact investigators if they have information or surveillance video that could assist with the case. Detectives are also seeking anyone who may have seen the bicyclist riding in the area prior to the crash or who has information about the vehicle involved.

No description of the suspect vehicle has been released. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet identified a suspect.

U.S. Route 20 is a major roadway running through Kane County. The section where the crash occurred is in a rural area of Hampshire with limited lighting at night.
