KS Woman Barbara Whitehorse ID’d As Victim In Thursday Columbus Fatal Crash

COLUMBUS, KS. (THECOUNT) — Barbara Ann Whitehorse, 73, of Baxter Springs, and James Bowles, 62, of Columbus, were involved in a two-vehicle crash Thursday on U.S. Highway 69 near Northeast Belleview Road in Cherokee County, Kansas.

According to authorities, the collision occurred on June 11 northeast of Columbus.

Investigators said Bowles was operating a vehicle northbound on U.S. Highway 69 when he lost control and crossed the center line.

Authorities reported that Bowles’ vehicle collided with a vehicle driven by Whitehorse.

Both drivers sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

Whitehorse was later pronounced dead in the emergency room, according to officials.

Bowles’ condition was not immediately released.

The crash occurred in Cherokee County in the southeastern corner of Kansas near the borders of Missouri and Oklahoma. The region is connected by several major transportation routes that serve local residents, commercial traffic, and travelers moving through the tri-state area.

U.S. Highway 69 is a major north-south corridor through eastern Kansas and carries significant volumes of passenger and commercial traffic. The route serves communities throughout the region, including Columbus, Baxter Springs, Pittsburg, and other municipalities in southeast Kansas.

Baxter Springs, where Whitehorse resided, is located near the Kansas-Oklahoma state line and is one of the oldest communities in Cherokee County. Columbus serves as the county seat and is situated several miles north of Baxter Springs.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported both drivers for medical treatment while investigators documented evidence and examined the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Officials have not released additional information regarding factors that may have contributed to Bowles losing control of his vehicle.

No further details regarding the crash investigation were immediately available.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the fatal collision.
