MI Man Jesse Maurer ID’d As Rider In Sunday Niles Fatal Motorcycle-Vs-Deer Collision

HOWARD TWP., MI. (THECOUNT) — Jesse Maurer, 28, of Niles, Michigan, was killed Sunday night after a motorcycle crash involving a deer in Cass County, according to authorities.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 8:55 p.m. Sunday, May 17, along M-60 near Lilac Avenue in Howard Township, located in southwest Michigan near the Indiana state line.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to reports of a motorcycle crash in the area Sunday night.

When authorities arrived, they found Maurer suffering from severe injuries.

Officials said Maurer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined Maurer had been operating a motorcycle northbound on M-60 at the time of the incident.

Authorities said a deer struck the side of the motorcycle while Maurer was traveling along the highway.

Following the impact, investigators said Maurer lost control of the motorcycle.

The motorcycle then left the roadway and entered a culvert.

The crash prompted an emergency response from deputies, firefighters, EMS personnel, and crash investigators who secured the area and documented evidence at the scene.

Traffic along M-60 near Lilac Avenue was affected while authorities conducted the investigation and crews cleared the roadway.

Officials have not publicly released additional details regarding speed, helmet use, or weather conditions at the time of the crash.

Animal-related crashes remain a significant roadway hazard throughout Michigan, particularly during nighttime hours and in rural areas where deer activity is common.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
