SAN ANTONIO, TX. (THECOUNT) — Marlene Vidal, 34, of Edinburg, Texas, has been arrested and charged with capital murder after authorities discovered the bodies of two children, ages 5 and 7, inside a burning vehicle Friday morning in San Antonio.
According to San Antonio police, the children were found deceased inside a burned vehicle in the parking lot of a warehouse property located in the 500 block of Richland Hills Drive on the city’s northwest side.
Authorities said the incident was reported between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Friday, May 15, after an individual walking a dog observed the vehicle on fire and contacted emergency responders.
San Antonio Assistant Police Chief Jessie Salame said officers and firefighters arrived at the scene and extinguished the blaze before investigators discovered the bodies of the two children inside the small vehicle.
The identities of the children have not yet been publicly released by authorities.
Officials also have not publicly disclosed the children’s official causes of death pending autopsy examinations by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Police said investigators quickly developed evidence leading to Vidal’s arrest.
According to Salame, the investigation includes surveillance footage, physical evidence collected from the scene, and statements allegedly made by Vidal.
“We have statements made by the suspect, along with surveillance video and evidence from the scene, that indicate she was solely responsible for the death of these two children,” Salame told reporters during a Friday media briefing.
Authorities said Vidal is from Edinburg, a South Texas city located in Hidalgo County near the Texas-Mexico border, but reportedly has family ties in San Antonio.
Investigators have not publicly detailed the relationship between Vidal and the children beyond identifying her as their mother.
Police have not released information indicating whether the children died before the fire started or as a result of the blaze.
The warehouse parking lot remained an active crime scene Friday morning as homicide detectives, arson investigators, and forensic personnel processed evidence connected to the case.
Authorities have not publicly described how the fire originated or whether accelerants may have been involved.
Officials said the investigation into a possible motive remains ongoing.
Salame stated investigators have seen indications that mental health issues may have played a role in the incident, though no additional details were released.
No other suspects are currently being sought.
Capital murder is one of the most serious criminal charges under Texas law and can carry penalties including life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty upon conviction.
The San Antonio Police Department continues coordinating the investigation alongside fire investigators and the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Additional details are expected to be released as investigators continue reviewing evidence and conducting interviews.
