ME Man Cobey Schmidt ID’d As Rider In Friday Vassalboro Fatal ATV Crash

VASSALBORO, ME. (THECOUNT) — Cobey Schmidt, of Vassalboro, Maine, has been identified as the victim in a fatal ATV crash Friday night in Kennebec County, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Schmidt was 52.

The crash occurred at approximately 8 p.m. in Vassalboro, a rural community located northeast of Augusta in central Maine.

According to Maine game wardens, Schmidt was operating an all-terrain vehicle when the ATV struck a rock during travel along the trail or roadway area where the incident occurred.

Investigators said the impact caused Schmidt to be thrown from the ATV before the vehicle subsequently rolled on top of him.

Authorities confirmed Schmidt sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency personnel.

Officials stated Schmidt was reportedly riding alone at the time of the incident.

Passers-by traveling through the area discovered the crash scene and contacted emergency dispatchers by calling 911.

Emergency responders from the Maine State Police and local Emergency Medical Services arrived shortly afterward and located Schmidt deceased.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said preliminary findings indicate speed appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding whether Schmidt was wearing protective safety equipment or a helmet at the time of the incident.

ATV crashes involving rollovers frequently result in severe injuries due to the weight of the vehicles and the limited occupant protection available during overturn incidents. Investigators typically examine terrain conditions, vehicle operation, speed, and mechanical factors as part of crash reconstruction efforts.

Vassalboro is known for its rural roadways, wooded terrain, and outdoor recreational areas frequently used by ATV riders and other recreational vehicle operators throughout the year.

Game wardens and investigators continued reviewing evidence connected to the fatal crash as part of the ongoing investigation.

The incident remains under active investigation by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
