Rocky Horror Picture Show Star Tim Curry Dies At 80

LOS ANGELES, CA. (THECOUNT) — Tim Curry, the acclaimed British actor best known for portraying Dr. Frank-N-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s “It,” has died at 80. Curry died late Tuesday night at his Los Angeles home after years of serious health problems, according to reports.

Los Angeles police responded to Curry’s home at approximately 11:23 p.m. Tuesday for a death investigation. The Los Angeles Fire Department had also responded earlier in the evening to a reported medical emergency, and Curry was pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement sources said no foul play was suspected.

Curry rose to international prominence after originating the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Show” on the London stage before reprising the role in the 1975 film adaptation, which initially received a mixed critical response before developing into one of the most enduring cult movies in American cinema.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” eventually became a fixture of midnight movie screenings, with audiences returning to theaters for decades and participating in elaborate screenings surrounding the film’s music, characters and performances. Curry’s portrayal of Frank-N-Furter became his signature role and established him as a distinctive presence in film and theater.

Curry later took on another iconic horror role as Pennywise the clown in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s “It.” His performance as the shape-shifting killer clown introduced him to another generation of fans and became one of his most recognizable screen performances.

His extensive film credits also included “Clue,” “Annie,” “The Hunt for Red October,” “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” “Muppet Treasure Island,” “Addams Family Reunion” and “Scary Movie 2.” His work extended across film, television, theater and voice acting during a career that lasted more than five decades.

Curry earned three Tony Award nominations during his theater career, including recognition for his performances in “Amadeus,” “My Favorite Year” and “Spamalot.” He also received an Emmy nomination for his television work.

Curry’s career was significantly affected by a major stroke he suffered in 2012. The stroke required brain surgery and left him with mobility limitations. In 2025, around the release of his memoir “Vagabond,” Curry said he remained unable to walk, although he continued working in entertainment and making public appearances when his health allowed.

Despite his health challenges, Curry continued contributing to the entertainment industry, including through voice work and occasional appearances connected to his extensive body of work. His memoir, “Vagabond,” provided a personal account of his life and career.

Curry was born in England in 1946 and began his professional acting career in London’s West End in the late 1960s. His early theater work eventually led to the role that would define his career and establish his place in popular culture.

Curry’s death brings an end to a career that crossed generations and genres, from groundbreaking musical theater and cult cinema to horror, comedy, drama and animation. His performances as Frank-N-Furter and Pennywise remain particularly influential among fans of the two franchises.
