Miley’s “Mind-Blowing” Aug. 25 Connection Hits Deeper After Dolly Parton Passes

LOS ANGELES, CA. (THECOUNT) — Miley Cyrus says she will always carry the memory of her godmother, country music legend Dolly Parton, following Parton’s death at 80 after a short battle with cancer.

Cyrus addressed Parton’s death Wednesday in a social media post, saying she did not feel it was appropriate to publicly detail the full depth of her emotions. She wrote that some moments are meant to remain private while sharing what she believes Parton would have wanted her to do with her grief.

“What I KNOW is Dolly would want me to feel it, write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong,” Cyrus wrote. “I have an angel by my side. I always have. One of our last conversations was about music and metamorphosis.”

Cyrus added that she will always love Parton and wants to make her proud. She also acknowledged that Parton’s family, friends and fans are grieving her loss.

The relationship between Cyrus and Parton extended well beyond their family connection. Parton was Cyrus’ godmother and appeared on several episodes of “Hannah Montana,” the Disney Channel series that starred Cyrus as the title character.

Cyrus has previously described Parton as being like a mother to her. The two also collaborated musically over the years, including performances that brought together Parton’s country music legacy and Cyrus’ pop career.

Cyrus has also spoken about the unusual significance of Aug. 25 in her life and career. During her 2023 ABC special “Endless Summer Vacation (Backyard Sessions),” she explained that the date carried personal and professional meaning.

On Aug. 25, 2023, Cyrus released “Used to Be Young.” A decade earlier, on Aug. 25, 2013, she released “Wrecking Ball” and appeared in the controversial performance at the MTV Video Music Awards that became one of the most discussed moments of her career.

The date also has a connection to Cyrus’ family. Her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, was born on Aug. 25. Her former husband, Liam Hemsworth, also confirmed that the couple had separated for the first time on Aug. 25, 2010.

Parton’s music added another unusual connection to the date. Her “Jolene” album runs 25 minutes and 8 seconds, creating an 8/25 numerical connection that Cyrus’ fans have noted following Parton’s death. The song “Jolene” subsequently surged to the top of the Apple Music chart.

Parton died Tuesday in Nashville on August 25 after a short battle with cancer. She was 80.

Parton’s death marks the loss of one of the most influential figures in country music and entertainment. Her six-decade career included international hits, film roles, philanthropy and a close relationship with Cyrus that introduced the younger performer to generations of Parton’s fans.

Parton’s family is planning an intimate memorial service in Nashville, with the singer-songwriter expected to be laid to rest next to her husband, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025.
