HAMPTON, TN. (THECOUNT) — Alexander Luster, of Boone, North Carolina, has been identified as the victim in a fatal boating incident Friday evening on Watauga Lake in Carter County, Tennessee, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Luster was 36.
Authorities said the incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. near the Rat Branch boat ramp on Watauga Lake in Hampton, Tennessee.
According to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, officers were dispatched to the area after receiving reports that a boat operator had fallen overboard in a designated no-wake zone and failed to resurface.
Investigators said Luster had been participating in a bass fishing tournament at the time of the incident and reportedly entered the water prior to the official start of the event.
Emergency crews and responding first responders initiated a search effort shortly after the report was received Friday evening.
Authorities said Luster’s body was recovered from the lake shortly after 11:30 p.m.
Officials have not yet released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding how Luster fell overboard or whether he was wearing a personal flotation device at the time of the incident.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency confirmed that an autopsy has been ordered as part of the ongoing investigation.
Watauga Lake is a large reservoir located in northeastern Tennessee near the North Carolina border and is a popular destination for recreational boating, fishing tournaments, and outdoor activities throughout the year. The Rat Branch boat ramp serves as one of several public access points commonly used by tournament participants and recreational boaters.
TWRA officials stated the incident marks the eighth boating-related death reported in Tennessee so far this year.
Boating incidents involving falls overboard frequently require extensive water recovery operations involving local emergency responders, wildlife officers, and marine recovery personnel. Investigators typically examine weather conditions, vessel movement, water conditions, safety equipment usage, and witness statements during such investigations.
Multiple agencies responded to assist with recovery operations on Watauga Lake Friday night as crews searched the area for several hours before recovering the victim.
Authorities have not indicated whether alcohol, medical issues, or mechanical problems may have contributed to the incident.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
