FL Man Trevor Fritz ID’d As Victim In Sunday St. Petersburg Fatal Motorcycle Crash

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (THECOUNT) — A 21-year-old Gulfport, Florida man is dead after his motorcycle was struck by a cargo van making a left turn in St. Petersburg late Sunday night, the St. Petersburg Police Department reported. Trevor Allen Fritz was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, where he died of his injuries. The van driver remained at the scene following the crash.

According to SPD, the crash occurred at approximately 11:50 p.m. on April 19 at the intersection of 18th Avenue South and Quincy Street South. Fritz was riding a black 2020 Harley-Davidson Iron 883 motorcycle eastbound on 18th Avenue South when a silver 2018 Ram ProMaster 2500 Cargo Van, traveling westbound, attempted to make a left turn onto Quincy Street South. The van entered Fritz’s path and the two vehicles collided. The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been announced.

Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, where Fritz was pronounced dead, is a Level II trauma center located in downtown St. Petersburg on 6th Street South. It serves as one of the primary trauma facilities for Pinellas County and the broader Tampa Bay region.

Gulfport, where Fritz resided, is a small city in Pinellas County that directly borders St. Petersburg, situated approximately 2 miles southwest of St. Petersburg’s city center along Boca Ciega Bay. With a population of approximately 11,800 as of the 2020 census, Gulfport is a close-knit waterfront community known for its arts district and historic casino ballroom. Stetson University College of Law is located in Gulfport.

St. Petersburg is the fifth-most populous city in Florida, with approximately 258,000 residents. Located on the Pinellas peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, the city is part of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area, which has an estimated regional population of more than 3 million. The crash site at 18th Avenue South and Quincy Street South is in the southern residential section of the city, in Pinellas County.

Pinellas County is the most densely populated county in Florida, with approximately 959,000 residents spread across 280 square miles of peninsula and barrier island. Clearwater serves as the county seat. The county is bounded by Tampa Bay to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the west, with St. Petersburg anchoring its southern half.

Left-turn collisions are among the leading causes of motorcycle fatalities. Turning vehicles crossing the path of oncoming motorcyclists account for a significant proportion of fatal intersection crashes nationally. SPD has not released information on whether speed or other factors are under review in connection with the fatal crash on 18th Avenue South.

The Ram ProMaster 2500 Cargo Van involved in the crash is a full-size commercial cargo van commonly used by businesses, delivery services, and contractors. SPD has not released the identity of the van’s driver or indicated whether that individual will face charges. The van driver’s cooperation at the scene — by remaining and speaking with officers — is a standard factor investigators consider in determining next steps in a fatal crash investigation.

St. Petersburg and the surrounding Pinellas County communities have seen a significant number of motorcycle fatalities in recent years. Florida consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of motorcycle crash deaths, driven in part by year-round riding conditions, high traffic volume on urban corridors, and the state’s large population of both resident and tourist riders. The Tampa Bay area, including the St. Petersburg corridor, accounts for a substantial share of those statewide fatalities annually.
