BEECH ISLAND, SC. (THECOUNT) — David Smith III has been identified as the victim in a fatal motorcycle crash Sunday night in Aiken County, South Carolina, according to officials.
Smith was 52.
According to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office, the crash occurred April 19 at approximately 10:45 p.m. along Sand Bar Ferry Road at Laurie Drive in Beech Island, a community located in western Aiken County near the South Carolina-Georgia state line.
Officials say Smith, a resident of Beech Island, was operating a 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle eastbound on Sand Bar Ferry Road when it collided with the trailer of a semi-truck that was in the process of turning.
The collision resulted in fatal injuries to Smith. He was pronounced dead at approximately 11:20 p.m. at the scene by responding personnel.
No additional details have been released regarding the driver of the semi-truck, including whether the individual remained at the scene or sustained any injuries. Authorities have not announced any charges or citations in connection with the crash.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Sand Bar Ferry Road and Laurie Drive, a roadway area that serves local traffic in the Beech Island community. The route is used by both passenger vehicles and commercial traffic traveling through the western portion of Aiken County.
Beech Island is part of the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), located just across the Savannah River from Augusta, Georgia. The region includes a network of local and regional roadways connecting communities in both South Carolina and eastern Georgia.
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is investigating the fatal crash in coordination with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Officials confirmed that a toxicology analysis is pending as part of the investigation.
Authorities have not released information regarding potential contributing factors, including speed, visibility, or impairment, as the case remains under review.
