TX Teen Sean Canales Killed In Sunday Lubbock Motorcycle Crash Maizie Casares Injured

LUBBOCK, TX (THECOUNT) — Sean Canales, 19, and Maizie Casares, 17, were involved in a motorcycle crash on the westbound lanes of the 4600 block of the Marsha Sharp Freeway in Lubbock, Texas, on Sunday night, according to the Lubbock Police Department. Canales was pronounced dead at University Medical Center, while Casares was hospitalized in critical condition.

Authorities said the collision occurred at approximately 7:38 p.m. when officers responded to a report of a motorcycle crash with injuries. Responding officers located both individuals at the scene and transported them via ambulance to the hospital.

Police reported that the motorcycle, driven by Canales, was traveling westbound on the Marsha Sharp Freeway when it struck a guardrail on the north side of the roadway. No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and no additional injuries were reported, according to the Lubbock Police Department.

The Lubbock Police Department’s Major Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances of the collision. Officers are collecting evidence from the scene, including roadway measurements and vehicle information, as part of the investigation.

The Marsha Sharp Freeway is a major east-west thoroughfare in Lubbock, commonly used by commuters and commercial traffic. The 4600 block of the freeway includes both eastbound and westbound lanes, with guardrails separating traffic directions. Authorities did not indicate any unusual roadway conditions at the time of the crash.

Motorcycle collisions on Texas roadways are monitored by state and local traffic enforcement units. According to data maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation, motorcycles account for a portion of vehicle-related fatalities annually, often due to the lack of physical protection compared to passenger vehicles. Police advise motorcyclists to use safety equipment and follow traffic regulations, but no details regarding safety equipment were released in this case.

University Medical Center confirmed that Canales was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Casares remained hospitalized, and no further updates on her condition were provided by authorities at the time of reporting.

The investigation remains active, and the Lubbock Police Department has asked anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Major Crash Unit directly. No citations or charges have been announced, and officials have not provided any additional information about the timeline or contributing factors pending the outcome of the investigation.
