FOUL PLAY: Nancy Guthrie Disappearance Now Investigated as Crime Scene

CATALINA FOOTHILLS, AZ (THECOUNT) — Nancy Guthrie, 84, the mother of NBC “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been reported missing, and authorities now consider her Tucson-area home a crime scene, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos. Officials have indicated a possible criminal element in her disappearance following the discovery of concerning evidence inside her residence.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen Saturday night near her home in the Catalina Foothills area of Pima County. A family member called 911 around noon on Sunday to report her missing, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement. Multiple agencies, including the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, homicide detectives, search-and-rescue personnel, K-9 units, helicopters, and Border Patrol agents, have been actively involved in the ongoing search.

Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed during a Monday morning news conference that investigators found troubling evidence inside Nancy Guthrie’s residence. While the sheriff did not specify what was found, he stated that the home is now being treated as a crime scene. “We believe now, after we process that crime scene, that we do, in fact, have a crime, and we’re asking the community’s help,” Nanos said, urging anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office immediately.

Authorities continue to search the area surrounding Nancy Guthrie’s home. The Catalina Foothills neighborhood has been extensively covered by personnel on foot, as well as aerial units using helicopters and drones. K-9 units are deployed to track any potential scent trails, while volunteers from local organizations assist in canvassing nearby streets, trails, and public areas.

Savannah Guthrie released a statement on Sunday thanking the public for their support. “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” she said. Savannah Guthrie also thanked law enforcement for their ongoing work in the case and encouraged anyone with information to come forward.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, reportedly has some physical ailments but has no cognitive issues, according to the sheriff’s office. The exact circumstances of her disappearance remain unclear. Authorities have not disclosed whether any suspects or persons of interest have been identified, and the investigation is ongoing.

The sheriff’s office has urged residents in the Catalina Foothills area to review any security camera footage and report suspicious activity. Investigators are examining the surroundings, including public trails and streets near Nancy Guthrie’s home, for potential evidence that could lead to her safe recovery.

Search efforts continue around the clock, with law enforcement emphasizing that the situation is being treated with the highest priority. All leads, tips, and evidence are being evaluated thoroughly to locate Nancy Guthrie and determine the circumstances of her disappearance. Officials remind the public not to speculate and to provide only verified information.

The case has drawn national attention due to Savannah Guthrie’s prominence as a television journalist. Savannah has previously spoken about her close relationship with her mother, noting her encouragement during Savannah’s early career, including when she took her first reporting position in Butte, Montana. However, all reporting from authorities remains focused on the ongoing investigation and the search for Nancy Guthrie.

Law enforcement continues to coordinate with local and federal agencies, employing all available resources to expedite the search. Residents and the public are urged to remain vigilant and report any credible information directly to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.
