WARSAW, KY (THECOUNT) — Iveth Salgado Calderon, 24, of Warsaw, Kentucky, was killed Sunday evening in a head-on crash on U.S. 42 E in Gallatin County, according to the Kentucky State Police.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. when a 20-year-old driver traveling westbound in a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado crossed the center line and struck Calderon, who was driving an eastbound 2023 Ford Bronco, police said. Calderon was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
Authorities did not release the name of the other driver, who was reportedly taken into custody for questioning. No further injuries have been confirmed at this time, and both vehicles were impounded as part of the ongoing investigation. State police continue to examine the crash site and collect evidence to determine the full sequence of events leading to the collision.
Kentucky State Police said preliminary findings indicate that the westbound Silverado crossed into oncoming traffic for unknown reasons. Investigators are reviewing factors such as road conditions, vehicle speed, potential impairment, and driver distraction as part of the ongoing investigation. The roadway remained partially closed for several hours Sunday night while emergency crews worked at the scene and conducted their initial reconstruction.
U.S. 42 is a heavily traveled corridor in northern Kentucky, connecting multiple counties including Gallatin, Boone, and Kenton, and it is frequently used for local and regional commuting. Head-on collisions on rural stretches of this road have historically posed a risk, especially during nighttime hours or under inclement weather conditions. Authorities have not indicated if weather was a factor in the crash.
Calderon was remembered by family and friends as a valued member of the Warsaw community. Social media posts following the incident reflected shock and grief over the young woman’s death. Police and local authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution when traveling in the area, particularly during nighttime hours.
State police encourage anyone with additional information about the crash to contact the Kentucky State Police post in Dry Ridge at (859) 823-4101. Investigators said tips and eyewitness accounts could be vital in reconstructing the events that led to the fatal crash.
Officials stressed that investigations of fatal crashes often take weeks to complete, as evidence is collected from the scene, vehicles are analyzed, and forensic reports are compiled. Final determinations regarding fault, citations, or charges have not been released.
This incident marks another tragic traffic death in Kentucky in 2026, highlighting ongoing concerns about roadway safety and the dangers of head-on collisions in both rural and urban areas. The Kentucky State Police emphasized that public safety remains a priority and that law enforcement will continue to monitor traffic patterns along U.S. 42 and other heavily traveled roads in the region.
Community members are encouraged to drive cautiously, follow posted speed limits, and remain attentive while traveling. Even minor distractions or lapses in judgment can have fatal consequences, particularly on two-lane rural highways where there is limited room to avoid oncoming vehicles.
