GA Man Don Hawck ID’d As Victim In Monday Elberton Fatal Crash

ELBERTON, GA (THECOUNT) — Donald B. Hawck, 67, of Elberton, was killed Monday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Georgia Highway 72 near Willis Drive in Elbert County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Troopers said Hawck was operating a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on GA 72 as he approached a curve in the roadway when the incident occurred. Investigators determined the pickup traveled onto an icy portion of the highway, which caused the vehicle to lose traction.

According to the Georgia State Patrol report, the Silverado began rotating counterclockwise after encountering the ice. The vehicle then crossed over the centerline before leaving the roadway on the north shoulder of GA 72.

Authorities said the truck continued off the roadway and struck a ditch. The impact caused the Silverado to overturn onto the driver’s side. After overturning, the vehicle came to rest facing south.

Hawck was partially ejected during the crash, troopers said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by responding personnel.

The Georgia State Patrol noted that no driver impairment was suspected in the incident. Investigators cited icy roadway conditions as a primary factor in the crash. Slick tires were also considered a contributing factor, according to the official report.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no additional injuries were reported.

Georgia Highway 72 is a primary route running through Elbert County and serves as a connector between Elberton and surrounding rural communities. The section of highway near Cut-Through Road includes curves where motorists can encounter hazardous driving conditions when moisture on the pavement freezes during cold weather events.

Law enforcement agencies routinely caution drivers about the risk of black ice forming on elevated or shaded portions of roadways during early morning hours when temperatures fall below freezing. Reduced traction in these areas can lead to sudden loss of control, particularly when vehicles are traveling at highway speeds.

Officials also emphasize the importance of tire condition during winter weather, as worn or slick tires can significantly reduce a vehicle’s ability to maintain grip on icy surfaces. The Georgia State Patrol frequently advises motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and exercise caution when traveling during freezing conditions.

The crash remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
