ORANGE COUNTY, NY (THECOUNT) — Joshua R. Stevens, 25, of Westtown, New York, has been identified as the man killed in a head-on crash in Orange County Friday afternoon, according to state police.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 2:55 p.m. on State Route 284 near County Road 22 in Westtown. Authorities said Stevens was operating a 2014 Jeep northbound on State Route 284 when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a 2018 Western Star tri-axle dump truck.
The dump truck, operated by a 38-year-old man from Wurtsboro, NY, was not injured in the crash, police confirmed. Stevens was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
Family members took to social media to remember Stevens, describing him as “a loving son, brother, and uncle” and recalling that “he had the biggest heart and warmest smile.”
State Police Greenville is leading the investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Authorities have not indicated whether speed, alcohol, mechanical issues, or road conditions contributed to the incident.
A GoFundMe has been started to help the family with expenses:
Via GoFundMe:
My name is Jared, and I am raising funds in memory of my brother, Joshua Stevens. Joshua was only 25 years old when he was tragically killed in a car accident on January 23rd. His sudden passing has left our family devastated and struggling to cope with the loss of someone who meant so much to us. Joshua had the biggest heart—he loved his family deeply and especially adored his nephew. He found joy in playing video games, with Assassins Creed being his favorite, and he always brought laughter and warmth to those around him.
As we face the difficult days ahead, we are seeking support to help cover Joshua’s funeral and burial expenses, as well as any outstanding bills he left behind. The costs are overwhelming, and we want to honor Joshua’s memory with a proper farewell while ensuring his affairs are taken care of. Any contribution, no matter the amount, will make a meaningful difference for our family during this incredibly hard time.
We are deeply grateful for any help and support. Joshua was a loving brother, son, and uncle, and your kindness will help us celebrate his life and support our family as we grieve.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at State Police Greenville at (845) 344-5300. Physical evidence from the scene, vehicle damage assessments, and any available traffic or surveillance footage are being reviewed to determine the cause of the collision.
The stretch of State Route 284 where the crash occurred is a two-lane road that sees regular traffic from both passenger and commercial vehicles, including large trucks. Officials have not said whether any temporary road closures were needed or if traffic was diverted following the crash.
No citations have been issued as of this time, and police emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
