SC Man Kevin Douglas ID’d As Victim In Wednesday Fatal Motorcycle Deer Strike

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC. (THECOUNT) — In a tragic start to the new year, 53-year-old Kevin Douglas from Lexington was killed in a motorcycle accident early Wednesday morning, as confirmed by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

Douglas was navigating his 2006 Suzuki motorcycle along Highway 35 when he collided with a deer, leading to a fatal crash. The impact was severe enough to eject Douglas from his bike. The incident took place at approximately 6:08 a.m., setting off a chain of emergency responses from multiple local services.

Emergency medical services from Berkeley County EMS, alongside officers from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, and firefighters from North Berkeley Fire and Rescue, swiftly arrived at the scene. Despite their rapid response, Douglas was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, in conjunction with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, has taken on the task of investigating this accident. They are meticulously examining the circumstances that led to this unfortunate event, including the condition of the road, the behavior of the wildlife, and the specifics of Douglas’s motorcycle.

Highway 35, known for its winding paths through rural parts of Berkeley County, often sees such wildlife interactions, particularly during the early hours when visibility can be lower and wildlife like deer are more active.

This incident adds to the somber statistics of road accidents involving motorcyclists, particularly those where the collision with wildlife results in fatalities. The South Carolina Highway Patrol’s investigation will look into whether speed, road conditions, or other contributing factors played a role in the incident.

Kevin Douglas, remembered by his community in Lexington, leaves behind a legacy of a life suddenly cut short by an unexpected encounter with nature. His family and friends are now grappling with this sudden loss, as are those in the Berkeley County area who respond daily to keep their roads safe.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office will continue its work to provide closure to Douglas’s family through a thorough investigation, aiming to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Meanwhile, the local community mourns another life lost on their roads, urging greater awareness and caution among all road users.
