WASHINGTON COUNTY, NC. (THECOUNT) — Michelangelo Fields, a 59-year-old resident of Plymouth, North Carolina, tragically lost his life in a two-vehicle crash on NC 32 in Washington County on Monday evening.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred when a log truck traveling south on the highway crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a box truck. Authorities identified the log truck driver as 73-year-old George Bailey of Washington.
Fields, who was driving the box truck, was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. Bailey sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Washington Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The Highway Patrol reported that the crash involved two commercial vehicles, but further details about the circumstances leading to the collision have not yet been released. Officials confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
The section of NC 32 where the crash occurred is a two-lane highway known for its rural stretches. Authorities have not disclosed whether factors such as speed, weather, or impairment played a role in the crash.
While Bailey is expected to recover physically, this tragic event highlights the dangers of commercial vehicle collisions, especially when larger vehicles like log trucks are involved.
