LOS ANGELES, CA. (THECOUNT) — Jay Leno, the legendary comedian and former host of The Tonight Show, has experienced another injury, this time from a dramatic fall down a hill. Known for his love of fast cars and motorcycles, Leno surprised fans by showing up to a Los Angeles event with visible bruising and an eye patch.
The Incident: A Dangerous Fall:
While attending a comedy gig, Leno revealed the injuries were caused by a fall in Pittsburgh before the show. Speaking to Inside Edition, the 74-year-old detailed the mishap:
“I fell 60 feet. Boom, boom, boom, boom,” Leno said. “I hit a bunch of rocks and now I’m all black and blue.”
A rock struck him in the eye, necessitating the eye patch. Without it, the bruising appeared even more severe. Despite the injuries, Leno maintained his characteristic optimism:
“It’ll be fine. I’m not worried about it,” he assured attendees.
A String of Accidents:
This recent injury adds to a series of unfortunate incidents that have raised concerns about Leno’s health and safety:
2023 Motorcycle Accident:
In January 2023, Leno suffered multiple injuries when he was knocked off his motorcycle. He explained that while investigating the smell of gas, he unknowingly entered a parking lot with a wire stretched between two poles.
“I’ve got two broken ribs. I’ve got two cracked kneecaps,” Leno said at the time, along with a broken collarbone.
2022 Garage Fire:
The year before, Leno sustained burns on 7% of his body while working on a car in his garage. A clogged fuel line ignited, leaving him with significant facial injuries. Despite the severity, he downplayed the incident after surgery, joking about his “new face.”
Leno’s Resilience:
Leno’s adventurous spirit and passion for vehicles have always been central to his public persona. His YouTube series and love of vintage and high-performance cars showcase a man unafraid to push boundaries. Whether it’s driving pre-World War I cars powered by aircraft engines or taking his rare $20 million McLaren F1 for a spin, Leno embraces risk with enthusiasm.
Even after this latest fall, Leno remains upbeat. “You take a few knocks in life,” he told fans. “I’m just lucky it wasn’t worse.”
Personal Challenges:
Beyond physical injuries, Leno has faced emotional trials. In April, he filed for conservatorship over his wife, Mavis, due to her advancing dementia. Court documents revealed that Mavis, 77, sometimes fails to recognize her husband or remember her date of birth.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Leno remains devoted to caring for his wife. “I’ve been very lucky in my life. I don’t complain about everything,” he said in an interview. “I cook dinner for her every night. It’s changes you have to make, but that’s OK.”
What’s Next?
Jay Leno’s latest injuries are a testament to his unyielding spirit and determination to continue living life on his terms. Fans hope that he takes precautions to avoid future accidents, especially given his history of close calls.
For now, Leno seems undeterred. Whether behind the wheel of a vintage car or on stage making audiences laugh, he shows no signs of slowing down.
