HANOVER COUNTY, VA. (THECOUNT) — Martin “Deane” Cheatham IV, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, has been identified as the victim in a Saturday fatal vehicle crash in Hanover County.
Cheatham, 30, was killed in a two-vehicle crash involving a utility truck Saturday morning in Hanover.
According to reports, Cheatham was operating a Ford F-150 pickup truck on the 11100 block of Hanover Courthouse Road in Hanover, when for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed centerlines and into opposing lanes. The vehicle then came into head-on contact with a utility truck around around 7:11 a.m. Saturday.
Cheatham was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma injuries at the scene
The driver of the utility truck was transported to an area with minor injuries.
According to facebook, Cheatham was a Service Supervisor at RCI Builders. He was a former Assistant Football Coach at Austin Peay State University and Western Carolina University.
Cheatham was a star football player at Hanover High School, where he earned first-team all-metro honors from The Times Dispatch and played as both a running back and linebacker. The Hawks won the Capital District for the first time while he was playing for the team, according to Richmond.
Cheatham was named to CAA Football’s preseason all-conference team.
He then went on to play for James Madison, where he was a starter on two teams that made the NCAA tournament as a tight end.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
