DONA ANA COUNTY, NM. (THECOUNT) — Nicholas Esteban Gurrola, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, has been identified as the suspected DUI driver in a Thursday double-fatal crash in Doña Ana County.
Nick Gurrola, 31, was charged with two felony counts of vehicular homicide, involving alcohol or drugs, following a multi-vehicle crash in Las Cruces Thursday night. He was also charged with one felony count of causing a crash resulting in great bodily injury.
According to reports, Gurrola was operating a minivan on Spruce Avenue near North Virginia Street in Las Cruces, when the vehicle came into contact with a vehicle before traveling into opposing lanes and colliding head-on with an SUV around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Gurrola attempted to flee the crash scene but was detained by witnesses until police arrived.
Two women inside the SUV died as a result of injuries suffered in the wreck. Another female passenger in the SUV was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. A 2-year-old girl in the SUV suffered unknown injuries.
Gurrola was taken into custody with further incident. He was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center where he is being held on a no-bond order.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
