IA Man Killed In Sunday Sioux Center Crash That Critically Injured Toddler Was Arrested In July DUI Crash

SIOUX COUNTY, IA. (THECOUNT) — Reyes Felipe Lopez-Lopez, 25, of Rockville, Iowa, has been identified as the victim in a Sunday morning fatal vehicle crash that critically injured a 32-year-old man and a 3-year-old girl in Sioux County.

TheCount.com has learned that Lopez-Lopez was arrested on July 8 on charges of reckless driving, failure to maintain control, interference with official acts, driving while his license was denied or revoked, and no valid driver’s license. He also was found to be wanted on several Sioux County warrants.

In the current single-vehicle crash, Lopez-Lopez was operating a vehicle on County Road B40 near Garfield Avenue in Sioux County, when for unknown reasons, possibly alcohol related, the vehicle crossed centerlines and exited the roadway around 6:30 a.m. Sunday. The vehicle then vaulted over a culvert before coming into contact with an embankment.

Marco Vinicio Lopez-Lopez and a three-year-old girl were transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

Reyes Felipe Lopez-Lopez was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma injuries at the scene.

The Iowa State Patrol said alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

On July 8, Reyes Felipe Lopez-Lopez, then 24, was arrested near Alvord after a Honda Odyssey van he was operating entered a ditch at the intersection of 210th Street and Elmwood Avenue northeast of Alvord, according to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

The responding deputy found a passenger at the scene, but the driver, Lopez Lopez, had hidden in the weeds and was not located for about 45 minutes.

Lopez-Lopez then admitted to being the driver, according to that incident report.
