ELKHART COUNTY, IN. (THECOUNT) — Investigators determined that the SUV driven by Zachery Potts, 27, of Mishawaka, Indiana, crossed the centerline for unknown reasons in a rural area near the town of Wakarusa. Officials originally reported the vehicle operated by Edith Schmucker, 56, of Nappanee, Indiana, had crossed centerlines causing the quadruple-fatal collision.
Potts, the district director for Republican Rep. Jackie Walorski of Indiana, was killed in the crash. Walorski, staffer Emma Thomson and Schmucker, were also killed in the crash.
Police said they used witness accounts of the collision and area video to determine which vehicle had actually caused the crash.
