NY Mom Crushed After Convincing Daughter ‘Be Responsible, Go To Work’ Before Teen Shot Dead At Burger King Sunday

NEW YORK, NY. (THECOUNT) — Kristal Bayron-Nieves has been identified as the teen victim fatally shot in an apparent armed robbery overnight at a Manhattan fast food chain. Her mother is now telling the heartbreaking story of how she convinced her daughter to get out of bed “be responsible and go to work,” the night shift.

Nieves, 19, was working the night shift as a cashier at Burger King at 154 E 116th St in New York, when she was fatally shot by a robber early Sunday, authorities said.

According to reports, Nieves was working at the eatery when an armed man entered the store and demanded money around 12:45 a.m. When police arrived, Nieves was found suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Nieves was transported to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead of gunshot injuries.

Local news outlets reported that the restaurant’s manager and a customer were also attacked. They are expected to recover.

The victim’s mother, Kristie Nieves, said her daughter had expressed concern while working at the restaurant “because she is only 19, and she has more than 50 homeless people sleeping in front of the store,” Kristie Nieves said through a Spanish translator.

Kristie Nieves is torn because she convinced her daughter to continue going to work.“[Kristal] said [Friday], ‘I don’t want to go. I’m scared,’ ” the heartbroken mom said. “I said, ‘You have to go and be responsible.’ At 10 p.m. I wake her up to go and tell her, ‘You have to go. You have to be responsible. You have to get a better life.’ “

The robber was estimated to have fled with around $100. No suspect information was made available as of Sunday afternoon.
