U Of Chicago Student Ilan Naibryf & GF Deborah Berezdivin ID’d As Missing In Florida Condo Collapse

SURFSIDE, FL. (THECOUNT) — Ilan Naibryf, 21, and his girlfriend, Deborah Berezdivin, have been identified as two of nearly 100 people reported missing or unaccounted following a condo building collapse early Thursday morning near Miami Beach.

Dozens were rescued from the rubble at the Surfside, Florida condo. At least ten people were injured and several were transported to area hospitals.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the incident happened around 1:30 a.m. at the Champlain Towers South condominium building, located at 8777 Collins Avenue in Surfside, according to WPTV.

“My nephew and his girlfriend were in the colapsed [sic] building on Surfside. They are missing. If you have information or hospital access PLEASE PLEASE contact me! ilan Naibryf and Deborah Berezdivin”

Video from the scene showed the building collapsed into a pile of bricks and debris on the ground.

According to authorities from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, 55 units were impacted inside the condominium building, which was more than 80% occupied at the time of the collapse.

Officials said an urgent search and rescue effort is underway with dogs, but they haven’t had any hits yet. Crews are tunneling into the rubble to find survivors.

The 12-story, 136-unit condominium building was built in 1981. It has a few two-bedroom units currently on the market, with asking prices of $600,000 to $700,000, police said.

The University of Chicago confirmed Naibryf’s status in a statement and offered their support:

“The University of Chicago has confirmed that Ilan Naibryf, a rising fourth-year physics and molecular engineering student in the College, is among the individuals missing following the collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium building in Surfside, Florida on Thursday, June 24,” Michele Rasmussen, Dean of Students, said in a statement.
