AL Man Derrick Turnley Indicted In 2018 For ‘Shooting At Son’ Arrested In Overnight Florence Murder

FLORENCE, AL. (THECOUNT) — Derrick Turnley, the Florence, Alabama man indicted in 2018 for shooting at his son, was arrested overnight and charged in a fatal shooting at a Long Lane home.

Turnley, 42, was taken into custody over a fatal shooting at a home on Long Lane in Florence early Saturday morning.

According to authorities, the Florence Police Department responded to a call of shots fired in the 500 block of Long Lane around 2 a.m. When they arrived, officials discovered a man inside the home suffering from apparent gunshot injuries.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of gunshot injuries.

Florence Fire Department and Shoals Ambulance arrived and determined that the man was dead, reports WHNT.

In March, 2018, police were called to a Maple Ave residence after multiple shots were fired.

Responding officers reported finding that Turnely and his son, who is in his 20s, had been involved in an altercation that led to the shots being fired. Officers reported that several rounds had struck adjacent occupied homes, reported TimesDaily in 2018.

Authorities said at the time that Turnley shot at his son with a .357-caliber pistol.

“The boy was not hit, but while Turnley was shooting at his son, the shots hit neighbors’ houses,” Wright said. “It’s amazing the son was not hit by the shots, nor was anyone who was inside the houses. This could have been a lot worse.”

In the current shooting, police arrested Turnley and charged him with murder.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time pending notification of family members.
