KNOXVILLE, TN. (THECOUNT) — Robin Howington, the mother of a five-year-old who was shot and killed in Knoxville on Saturday, has been arrested over “tampering with evidence,” according to Wednesday reports.
Howington, 36, was charged with two counts of tampering with evidence in a shooting that claimed the life of her five-year-old daughter, according to Knoxville police Wednesday.
KPD say they responded to a call of shots fired in the 500 block of Balsam Drive in Knoxville just before 9 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived officials found a 5-year-old girl suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
The child was transported to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead of gunshot injuries.
Howington arrived to the hospital did not want to hand over her cell phone to officers. She then attempted to destroy the device by placing it under running water. Officials say Howington did this because she feared it would have evidence of drug sales on it.
Howington admitted to hiding the firearm that was used in the shooting and wiping the gun down prior to hiding it in the bushes. She also admitted to altering the crime scene back to its normal state, reports WATE.
KPD says it is investigating the shooting as an active homicide.
No further details have been provided.
