CLARKSVILLE, IN. (THECOUNT) — Travis Hughes of Peewee Valley, Kentucky, has been identified as the kayaker who drowned in Indiana Ohio River on Saturday night.
Hughes, 28, reportedly capsized his kayak in an effort to rescue his girlfriend whose kayak had also capsized near Harrison Avenue boat ramp in Clarksville on Saturday.
Police responded to George Rogers Clark the boat ramp around 9:30 p.m. Saturday on reports of two people in the water.
Preliminary investigation determined Hughes was kayaking with his girlfriend and brother when the woman’s boat overturned after encountering a wake.
Officials said Hughes attempted to rescue the woman, causing his watercraft to capsize.
His body was recovered just out from the dam across the boat ramp.
Hughes was pronounced dead of an apparent drowning at the scene.
Crews searched the Ohio River for several hours before recovering Hughes.
Toxicology results are pending. Officials said no life jackets were present or worn by any of the kayakers, reports WLKY.
The condition of the girlfriend was not provided by officials.
