NYPD Officer Johnny Rios ID’d As Tuesday Suicide In Rash Of Department Self-Inflicted Deaths

STATEN ISLAND, NY. (THECOUNT) — Early Tuesday morning, off-duty NYPD officer, Johnny Rios, died by suicide at his home in Yonkers. The death marks the 8th suicide death for the department in 2019, 6 of those coming within the last 10 weeks.

Police sources, Rios, 35, had seven years on the job and was most recently posted to the Bronx. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the source added.

The off-duty Bronx cop apparently killed himself last Tuesday in Yonkers, the eighth NYPD cop to die by suicide this year, records show.

Rios worked in the Bronx and died of self-inflicted injuries around 3 a.m. in Yonkers, officials said Tuesday.

He had seven years on the job, reports NYP.

Law enforcement sources said the victim left behind a note.

The NYPD offers counseling with the Employee Assistance Unit and the Chaplains Unit and also encourages the use of Police Officers Providing Peer Assistance, which is separate from the department.

NYPD Sergeant Terrance J. McAvoy, has been identified as the seventh department officer to commit suicide so far in 2019.

McAvoy, 30, who joined the force in 2011, was found dead of an apparent suicide in his New Dorp, Staten Island, home last Saturday.

The fallen officer was a star athlete and graduate of Monsignor Donovan High School, who went on to study criminal justice and work for the New York Police Department, reports JerseyShoreOnline.

McAvoy was raised in Westerleigh on Staten Island before moving to Lacey Township. He graduated in 2007 and earned his bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University in New York City.

“Sergeant Terrance J. McAvoy was a friend & a great cop dedicated to service for 8 years. He did most of his career in the 72, (7 years), he was promoted to Sergeant over a year ago and also was a cadet. We will truly miss you Mac, as most of us called him,” the @NYPD72Pct tweeted July 28.

McAvoy is survived by his mother and father, Marialice and Keith McAvoy; his brother, Ryan McAvoy; sister, Kerry McAvoy; sister-in-law, Naomi McAvoy, and nephew, Declan McAvoy.

Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Aug. 1 at Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Ave, in Staten Island.

The funeral is 10 a.m. Aug. 2 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 30 Manor Road, Staten Island.
