FL Woman Arrested After Taking Ex-Husband’s Guns To Lakeland Police Station For ‘Safe Keeping’

LAKELAND, FL. (THECOUNT) — Courtney Irby has been identified as the woman arrested recently after transporting her ex-husband’s gun collection to a local Lakeland, Florida police station, for “safekeeping.”

Irby, an alleged victim of domestic violence, was arrested and charged with armed burglary after she removed her estranged husband Joseph Irby‘s guns from his residence and brought them to a police department.

Joseph had been arrested the following night for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Courtney, who appeared on a phoned-in court hearing the next day along with her ex, heard the judge order Joseph released from custody and barred from possessing any firearms.

That’s when Courtney took the judge’s order and personally removed Joseph’s weapons from his residence and transported them to the Lakeland Police Department – Where she was quickly arrested for armed burglary of a dwelling and grand theft of a firearm.

According to court documents, she told the police officer on duty that her husband had been arrested the day before, and that she wanted to hand in his guns because she didn’t believe he would turn them in, reports Huffpo.

The police officer asked if she had taken her husband’s firearms without his permission. When she replied yes, he told her that she was confessing to a crime.

Lakeland Police Department did not immediately respond to request for comments.

What do you think? Should the woman have been arrested for removing a violent partner’s weapons? Or did she cross the line by taking it upon herself to police the ex’s firearms? Comment below and share this post with family and friends on social media!
