CREEK COUNTY, OK. (THECOUNT) — Paul Schultz, 63, of San Diego, California, was killed Sunday morning after a crash on Interstate 44 in Creek County, Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Schultz was a passenger in a vehicle traveling eastbound on I-44 when the vehicle left the roadway and struck another vehicle parked on the shoulder.
Creek County is located in northeastern Oklahoma, near the Tulsa metropolitan area and along major transportation routes including Interstate 44. The crash occurred on a heavily traveled interstate corridor connecting communities across the region.
The crash was reported around 4:24 a.m. Sunday, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Investigators said Schultz was riding as a passenger in a vehicle traveling eastbound on I-44 when the vehicle veered off the interstate.
The vehicle then collided with another vehicle that was parked on the right shoulder of the roadway, authorities said. The impact caused the parked vehicle to roll over and come to rest partially in the interstate lanes.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where medical personnel pronounced Schultz dead, according to OHP.
The driver of the vehicle Schultz was traveling in was injured during the crash and was transported for treatment. Authorities did not release additional information regarding the driver’s condition.
The driver of the parked vehicle was not injured, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation. Authorities have not released additional details regarding what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway or whether any contributing factors have been identified.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol continues to investigate the collision as troopers work to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal crash.
