Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy Son Elijah Arrested After Shooting Mother Mia Sunday

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA. (THECOUNT) — Mia Bieniemy, 57, wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was injured Sunday night after being shot at the couple’s home in Loudoun County, Virginia, according to reports and authorities. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office confirmed an adult female suffered “multiple gunshot wounds” during the incident.

Loudoun County is located in northern Virginia, west of Washington, D.C., and is part of the Washington metropolitan region. The shooting occurred at a private residence as authorities responded to a reported domestic incident involving members of the Bieniemy family.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the scene at approximately 7:32 p.m. Sunday. Authorities confirmed one adult female victim was transported for treatment but did not publicly identify her.

According to ESPN, Mia Bieniemy was hospitalized after suffering gunshot wounds to her arm and chest. Additional details regarding her condition were not immediately released by authorities.

Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, was arrested following the shooting, according to a release from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office. Elijah was charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling.

Authorities said Elijah was transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.

The Kansas City Chiefs confirmed they were aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family but declined to provide additional comment.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation Monday, offering support to Bieniemy and his family. Reid said Mia Bieniemy was stable and that Eric Bieniemy’s other son, Eric Jr., was also stable.

Reid said he was uncertain when Bieniemy would return to the team. Bieniemy was present at Kansas City’s training camp in Missouri earlier Sunday but did not attend Monday’s practice.

Bieniemy returned to the Chiefs organization after previously serving as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2018 through 2022. During that period, Kansas City became one of the NFL’s most successful offenses, including multiple Super Bowl appearances.

After leaving Kansas City, Bieniemy served as offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023 before spending the 2024 season at UCLA. He later joined the Chicago Bears as running backs coach in 2025 before returning to the Chiefs offensive coordinator role.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the shooting. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
