Marion County Sheriff Ronnie “Bo” Burnett confirmed Schindel’s identity Thursday but said the name of the second detective, also a veteran and the one believed to be responsible for the accidental gunshot, is being withheld until the TBI concludes its interviews in a follow-up probe of the shooting, reports TimesFreePress.
The bullet Struck Schindel in the leg, shattering her femur. She has already undergone one surgery.
Burnett said initial reports indicate the second detective dropped a magazine out of an AR-15 rifle while he was unloading it and was clearing the chamber when the weapon accidentally discharged Wednesday afternoon.
