NEWTON COUNTY, AR. (THECOUNT) — Andrea Norton, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, has been identified as the victim killed after suffering a fall while taking a selfie on Hawksbill Crag, a popular tourist spot in Kingston, Arkansas.
Norton, 20, was visiting the area on a school-related trip with classmates from Sioux City, Iowa, Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said Saturday.
“She was here with a group from her college, and the professor that led the group has been coming here for more than 20 years and bringing groups here,” reports NYDailyNews.
Norton, a member of the Women’s Volleyball team at Briar Cliff University, was hiking with classmates from Sioux City, Iowa, when she slipped and fell off the 100-foot drop while positioning herself for a photo, Wheeler told the Associated Press.
It took 61 responders several hours to get to her, he said.
Wheeler told KY3 that between five and 10 calls annually come into his office regarding falls or injuries near the popular overlook.
“They’re not always fatal falls,” Wheeler told the station. “But they’re injuries in that area. When I’m talking about that area, I’m talking about Hawksbill Crag, or the trail into Hawksbill Crag, or that bluff line.”
The spot within the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest, about 101 miles northwest of Little Rock, is popular with hikers, the Associated Press noted.
She was the second college student to perish in a fall in a week. On Sunday in New York City, Fordham University journalism student Sydney Monfries, 22, tripped on a landing while climbing the stairs inside the Keating Hall bell tower. She fell 40 feet through an opening in the stairs and died later that evening.
