MN Thirsty Whale Bakery Owners Lose Home, Dog In Friday Minneapolis Blaze

MINNEAPOLIS, MN. (THECOUNT) — Kyle and Megan Baker, owners of the popular, Thirsty Whale Bakery, in north Minneapolis, shuttered their busy business for the day announcing on Facebook they lost their home to a house fire Friday.

The bakery’s Facebook page later added that one of their beloved dogs, Zita, was killed in the blaze.

“We are absolutely heartbroken to tell you that we lost one of our dogs, Zita, in the fire,” they wrote. “She was absolutely loved and our family will never be the same without her. Coming home to her after working at the shop was the best part of our day.”

They posted that the Minneapolis Fire Department was able to save their other puppy and two cats.

According to a GoFundMe page set up on the Bakers’ behalf, they were at the bakery early Friday morning when they got the call about the fire. The page says that the house and all their belongings are a total loss, reports KARE11.

The Bakers said on Facebook that they plan on reopening Saturday morning.

The Bakers won the National Cake Decorating Championships in 2017. This is not the first challenge they’ve faced since then, as a break-in pushed back the opening of their bakery in 2018.

Kyle and Megan just got married in January.

Megan is a 24 year old graduate of Le Cordon Bleu and has been working as a professional, award winning Pastry Chef for several years. You may have seen her work in Minnesota Bride or American Decorator. She specializes in extreme custom cakes (think 3D dragon climbing up the side of a castle – she literally did that once… check out the gallery). If you can dream it, Meg will find a way to make it. And it will taste delicious, too, according to the couple’s website.

As the founder of the Thirsty Whale, Megan is the creative energy that keeps the shop going. She’s always looking for a new way to break the rules and push the limits. Our best advice? Order a cake and let her take some creative liberties. You will not be disappointed!

In her free time, Meg likes spending time with her dogs (Zita and Katie) and cats (Chyp and Kitters), going to concerts, hiking, and painting.

Developing.
