MN College Student, Drummer, Sarah Papenheim ID’d As Victim Fatally Stabbed While Studying Abroad In Rotterdam Netherlands

ROTTERDAM, NL. (THECOUNT) — Rotterdam Erasmus University student, Sarah Papenheim, from Andover, Minnesota, has been identified as the victim stabbed to death Wednesday in Rotterdam, Netherlands. A suspect who shared a common area with the young drummer has been taken in custody over the fatal incident.

Papenheim, 21, was found suffering from stab wounds in an apartment on Kralingse Kerklaan, Rotterdam, Netherlands. Attempts to resuscitate her failed, police said Friday.

According to a police statement, authorities responded to reports of an altercation at an apartment complex on Kralingse Kerklaan on Wednesday. Upon arrival, police located Papenheim laying in a pool of blood suffering from multiple stab wounds, reports say.

An investigation led authorities to the suspect, Papenheim’s roommate, who was later arrested at the Eindhoven train station, the police statement said.

The two lived in the same apartment with their own rooms, but shared a kitchen and bathroom, police said.

The suspect has not been identified by police.

Papenheim, who attended Foothill High School in Redding, California, had moved to the Netherlands in 2016 to study in Rotterdam. She was an active musician, who was nicknamed “Thumper,” by star drummer Jellybean Johnson, after the two had a chance meeting when she was only 15.

“Sarah studied psychology and lived in the Netherlands since 2016. Our deepest condolences go out to all Sarah’s family and friends at this poignant time. The university is shocked by this terrible incident and is taking care of upset students and employees,” Erasmus University said in a statement..

“The thing that is going through my head is that she was coming home for Christmas, as we were all so excited to see her and to hear that she was coming back that way, and that was just tragic,” a heartbroken family member told reporters.

Rotterdam is a major port city in the Dutch province of South Holland. The Maritime Museum’s vintage ships and exhibits trace the city’s seafaring history. The 17th-century Delfshaven neighborhood is home to canalside shopping and Pilgrim Fathers Church, where pilgrims worshiped before sailing to America. After being almost completely reconstructed following WWII, the city is now known for bold, modern architecture, according to wikipedia.
