BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, IN. (THECOUNT) — Carmyn Elkins and Matthew Newland have been identified as the Columbus teens killed following an accident involving a train in Bartholomew County late Friday night.
According to the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to the scene, located at, US 31 and W 550 N, in Taylorsville, IN, in response to a vehicle-versus-train collision.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered a Nissan Versa that had failed to yield at a posted railroad crossing and were struck by a train. The conductor reportedly blew the horn repeatedly which was ignored by the victims.
Both occupants of the Nissan were extricated from the vehicle and transported to an area hospital where they were later pronounced dead of blunt force trauma injuries consistent with the collision.
Deputies observed a train south of the intersection with front end damage and a gray 2015 Nissan Versa with heavy damage which was located in a field southeast of the intersection. Two occupants were reported to be in the Nissan, both unconscious and trapped. source
Deputies are reviewing footage of the crash from the train dash camera.
The engineer and the conductor were both uninjured.
