FORT CAMPBELL, KY. (THECOUNT) — A Fort Campbell soldier from Jacksonville killed on base Saturday has been identified as 27-year-old Brittany Silvers. The soldier’s spouse was taken in custody after Silvers was found shot dead Sunday on the grounds of Fort Campbell army post.
The fatal shooting occurred about 10 p.m. and resulted in the army post being locked down, with all gates closed, for about an hour while military police investigated the case.
Silvers’ family told local news outlets she was trying to escape her violent husband and had changed the locks to her home on base. They are furious that he was still allowed in with his spousal military ID.
“Our hearts and prayers are with the Families involved. Any loss of a Soldier has a profound impact on the entire Army Family,” Brig. Gen. K. Todd Royar, acting senior commander, 101st Airborne Division and Fort Campbell, said in a statement. source
Royar added that normal procedures were followed after the shooting.
“Our priority remains the safety and security of our Soldiers, their Family members and our civilian personnel,” Royar said.
Officials said the slaying was being investigated by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command and FBI.
