SILVERHILL, AL. (THECOUNT) — The Baldwin County Sheriff’s office has issued a statement of a shooting incident during a safety checkpoint Friday.
The checkpoint, conducted by the Silverhill Police Department, was the scene of a shooting and resulting high-speed pursuit involving a Toyota sedan driven by Jamie E. Middleton, Jr.
On August 24, 2018, the Silverhill Police Department conducted a safety checkpoint on State Highway 104 in Silverhill, Alabama. During the operation a Toyota sedan, driven by Jamie E. Middleton, Jr., approached officers who were conducting the checkpoint. As a Silverhill Police Officer walked toward the vehicle the passenger, Shamone Morris, began leaning over into the driver’s seat area. As the officer got closer the car’s engine began to race before the Toyota accelerated toward the officer. The officer was struck and received injuries before the suspect sped towards a second Silverhill police officer, and an ALEA Trooper who was assisting. During the incident officers fired their weapons at the suspects as the officers jumped out of the way of the vehicle speeding toward them.
The suspects fled the scene and led law enforcement officers from multiple agencies on a pursuit through Baldwin County. The vehicle pursuit ended when the suspects crashed into a utility pole in the Barnwell Community. Shamone Morris fled from the vehicle after the crash. He was taken into custody a short time later. It was at this time that law enforcement learned that Morris received injuries during the incident. Shamone Morris was transported to a local hospital and is currently being treated for his injuries. He is expected to recover.
Jamie Middleton, Jr. has been charged with Assault in the Second Degree and two counts of Attempted Murder.
The Silverhill Police Officer that was injured during this event was transported to a local hospital. He was treated and released.
The Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit is conducting the investigation relating to this incident. This investigation is in the preliminary stages and it is ongoing. Other details will not be immediately available. source
