LA PORTE CITY, IA. (THECOUNT) — Authorities have recovered human remains near the area where 16-year-old Jake Wilson, an autistic boy from La Porte City, Iowa, disappeared in April.
Investigators said the remains are believed to be Wilson’s.
His disappearance prompted a search involving the FBI, state and local police officers and hundreds of volunteers in La Porte City, a town of about 2,300 in northeastern Iowa.
Wilson was last seen April 7, when he said he was going for a walk blocks from his home along Wolf Creek, which winds through La Porte City. His family said he didn’t have his glasses, and that he had the mental capacity of a 9-year-old boy. source
Officials said in a news conference late Thursday afternoon that the remains were discovered by kayakers in rural Wolf Creek, the area in which Wilson disappeared.
La Porte City Police Chief Chris Brecher said at the news conference that testing shows the remains are consistent with “what we’re looking for.”
Authorities said they had searched the area where the body was found during searches done months ago, but said the water was higher at that time.
